Understanding the Health Insurance Requirement
How to Use Your Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan

IMPORTANT HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION

The U.S. Department of State regulations (22 C.F.R § 62.14) requires all J exchange visitors to have health insurance for the entire duration of their DS-2019. Any J-1 exchange visitor who willfully or negligently does not purchase health insurance for themselves and/or their family will be terminated from the WSU Exchange Visitor program.

All J-1 visiting scholars and their J-2 dependents must purchase the OISS international health insurance plan currently provided by AETNA Student Health.

We do not accept Travel Insurance.  Please DO NOT purchase Travel Insurance because you will have to spend additional funds to purchase OISS' health insurance for international students and scholars.

REPATRIATION & MEDICAL EVACUATION COVERAGE IS REQUIRED

WSU requires repatriation and medical evacuation coverage for all international students and scholars, except Commuting Canadian Students. Therefore, scholars employed at WSU and covered by a WSU employee health insurance plan, must purchase the OISS WSU International Health Insurance Program’s repatriation and medical evacuation benefit for the duration of their DS-2019.

COMMUTING CANADIAN J-1 SCHOLARS

J-1 Scholars can no longer use their OHIP as proof of health insurance coverage. Because it does not provide adequate coverage while here in the U.S, and does not meet the Department of State health insurance requirements. They must purchase the OISS WSU health insurance currently provided by AETNA student health. Which can be purchased on-line at aetnastudenthealth.com.

CANADIAN SCHOLARS LIVING IN THE U.S.

Canadian scholars residing in the U.S. cannot use their OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) because it does not provide adequate coverage in the U.S. Scholars must purchase the OISS WSU insurance. TRAVEL INSURANCE DOES NOT MEET THE WSU HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS.
