How much will the testing cost?

The cost of a TB blood test will be billed to your health insurance. If you have purchased AIG Health Insurance, there will be no fee charged for the TB blood test. If you have another insurance provider, the Campus Health Center (CHC) will bill them for the cost of your test.

If there is any portion of the test that is not covered by your insurance, you will be billed for that amount. Without insurance, the TB blood test cost $60*.

The clinic accepts**: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, money orders, and Wayne State One Card. Depending on your TB test result, you may also need a chest x-ray. These added tests will be billed to your insurance and you will be responsible for payment of any charges not covered by your insurance.

*Disclaimer: prices may change at any time and they are continuing to add new insurance providers. Please call CHC at 313.577.5041 or come in with questions regarding pricing and insurance to get the most current information.
**Please note we do not accept personal checks.

What will happen if I do not have the TB test?

The Office of International Students and Scholars will place a hold on your student account which will prevent future term registration until you have met the TB testing requirements. The Campus Health Center will provide the Office of International Students and Scholars a list of students who have completed TB testing. Your test results are not released to anyone without your specific written permission. If you have a question regarding the hold on your account, please contact the OISS office at 313-577-3422 or at oissmail@wayne.edu.

Can I have the TB test done in my home country before I arrive at WSU?

Yes, you can!  This can help expedite the process upon arrival.  However, there are requirements to ensure the TB test can be accepted by the Campus Health Center.

Most importantly, any TB testing must be done within 30 days of arrival to the United States.

If you choose to have the TB test done in your home country, an appointment is still required at the Campus Health Center so that we can review the results and go over other additional risk factors for TB with you.  If you choose to have a TB test done elsewhere the test results must be in English, and printed on official letterhead.  Additionally, the document must have your name, date of birth, and be signed & dated by the healthcare provider.  We strongly recommend you have a blood test done called an IGRA (T-Spot or Quantiferon Gold test).  We will need a printed copy of the test result.

If you have a TB skin test done (PPD), documentation of the skin test must include the date the PPD was placed, date it was read, the result in millimeters of induration, as well as the interpretation of positive or negative.  If you have a chest x-ray performed as a result of a positive TB test (blood test or skin test), we will need a copy of the written chest x-ray report in English. The chest x-ray must be a two view PA/Lateral.

If you are unsure of what testing is needed, we recommend that you have the TB testing done at the Campus Health Center when you arrive to ensure the proper testing is done.

What is the process for testing?

You will make an appointment, or visit one of the walk-in testing sessions. A nurse practitioner will go over any documentation you may bring, and administer the test, if needed.

If the test was administered, three days later you will report back to the clinic to receive the test results. It is at this visit your hold release documentation will be provided to you.

The hold release document must be presented to the OISS office to have the hold officially removed.

Will the TB test results affect my visa or student status?
Having TB will NOT affect your visa or student status. Students who have TB infection are not discriminated against in any way. WSU must report cases of active TB (not inactive TB) to county health departments for investigation of possible transmission to others. Otherwise, health records at WSU are confidential and cannot be released without patient consent. Your TB test result will not appear on your academic documents.
