How to Apply for a New Michigan Driver's License

You can apply for an original driver's license, renewal or State ID at a local Secretary of State office.

In addition to the other non-immigrant documents you need, you will need to present a social security number and if you do not have a social security number you will need to obtain a letter of ineligibility from the social security administration.

You will need to explain to the social security office that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number because you are currently not employed and that you need the letter in order to apply for your driver's license.

You will receive the letter right away; you will not have to make a second trip to the Social Security Office.

The Social Security office on Michigan and Cass in the Federal building, downtown Detroit will issue the letter of ineligibility on the spot.
